History

From: "The history of Sala Comacina"

Those arriving today at Sala Comacina on the convenient provincial road, or arriving from an elegant ship of the Lariana society, are unlikely to get an idea of what this town looked like in past centuries. It was precisely the opening of this provincial road that made him change his physiognomy, which pushed him, so to speak, to overflow from the ancient circle to expand in every sense and especially towards noon, with new buildings and surrounded by stately villas. from delightful gardens.
The old village must go and look down below, below the parish church of San Bartolomeo. We have to go down some steep, narrow steps, penetrate into certain shafts that wind through humble houses and remains of ancient walls blackened by time, where the sun penetrates barely and where the air is impregnated by the melancholy smell of decrepit things. The doctors will say that these narrow alleys do not correspond to the demands of modern life; but what a blow for painters, for poets, for artists in general and for all those who go in search of the so-called local color!
Here stood the old Hall, a small group of huts piled between the church and the bank near the ruins of a medieval fortification, dismantled at the time of the fights between islanders and aschisans, a half a dozen fires in all.
And so he saw Paolo Giovio, who in his description of Lario speaks of it in these terms:
" … Salademum pagus occurit cum vetusta arce in adito negociosis piscatoribus frequens. Contra id salaniani litoris spatium porrigitur insula, protenso in ongitudinem dorso, cadaver antiquate urbia navigantibus ostentans…"
in a few words, the illustrious bishop of Nocera succeeded in portraying the landscape as it was in his time, that is, in the sixteenth century.
Then we reached Sala for the ancient Regina road, now abandoned, which in that section passed fifty meters above the current one. At one point, and precisely where there is still a small chapel dedicated to San Rocco, the road forked: on one side it continued towards Spurano and Ospedaletto, on the other it went down to the village of Sala along a torrent that dumped into the lake, through the country. At the entrance of this, that is near to the point where the provincial intersects with the cordonata road that goes up to the cemetery, there were the remains of an ancient fortress (vetusta arce).
Some arches and a few pieces of wall still suffocated by the houses that have appropriated those ruins as well as solid foundations.
Arriving at the chapel of San Rocco, the passenger of that time must necessarily be struck by the spectacle that was offered to his looks. At the bottom of a shattered tower seemed to be guarding the modest fishing village that stretched out to the soui; further on, the historic island, full of glory and legends, with its gutted ramparts, with its castle reduced to a pile of rubble, ostentatiously displayed to the sailors the skeleton of the powerful and dreaded fortress. A show that was to impress even the most skeptical, causing them to meditate on the transience of human grandeur and that suggested to Monsignor Giovio the truly sculptural phrase:cadaver antiquate urbia navigantibus ostentans.
